About Ms. K
My name is Mareena Kohtala, and I am an educator with a passion for connecting with other educators. I am a former classroom teacher with experience in Kindergarten, Second Grade, Third Grade, Fourth Grade, and Fifth Grade! Two of those years (Fourth and Fifth Grades), I taught the math, science, and social studies blocks. I also taught a block of 6th grade level math.
After the US, I worked in Doha, Qatar for four years. Two years at Qatar Academy as the Lead Teacher for Libraries and Technology, and as a Gifted Students Coordinator. The next two years I moved to English Modern School as the school's first 21st Century Learning Coordinator. This position saw my focus shift from classroom impact to school-wide strategic planning and implementation. In July 2018, I started my latest adventure in Jeju, South Korea. I now have the amazing opportunity to work with the staff at Korea International School, Jeju campus as the elementary school associate principal.
I graduated from Auburn University with a B.S. in Elementary Education. I then went on to the University of Georgia, where I earned a M. Ed in Early Childhood Education. I completed my Ed.S. in Instructional Technology from Kennesaw State University.
I am originally from Finland where I lived until I was ten. I was also fortunate enough to have the chance to live in Marseilles, Frances and Freiburg, Germany during my childhood. I lived in the Atlanta area in the US for about 20 years, but I now call Doha home!
My desire to teach stems for my own passion for learning. I think at the heart of every great teacher must be someone with a desire to be a lifelong learner. I have always loved math and have enjoyed sharing my passion for problem solving and reasoning with my students. It is my mission to instill a love of learning in my students and help each student discover his/her interests and passions. I believe in creating an engaging classroom in which students are inspired to learn more. I also believe that the educational experience should be relevant and match the world around us. Technology is an integral part of our lives, and it is my role to help prepare students to utilize it safely.
I love to connect with other enthusiastic educators, so contact me via the social media links! I would love to hear from you!
